[...] Finally, Erin hits us with an awesome story of how she “used lucid dreaming to conquer a major fear,” in Embracing Your Fear. This is a fascinating account of being haunted by the popular horror figure from Nightmare on Elm Street! Erin relays how Freddy haunted her - even in her lucid dreams! - for nearly a year, how she tried to stop him, and ultimately, how she was able to succeed in conquering her fear. [...]

[...] A fellow blogger, Erin Pavlina, writes about how much trouble she had with Freddy Krueger. Erin was a teenager when she saw “Nightmare on Elm Street”. At that time she was already an expert lucid dreamer, which meant that she could be “awake” and conscious during her dreams, and control her dream world. But Freddy turned out to be a dream image she couldn’t control. She’d be flying around in her dreams, saving the world from the Clutches of Evil, and suddenly Freddy would appear out of nowhere and kill her. This went on for almost a year, until she was finally able to face down Freddy and deal with him. Why did Freddy give her so much trouble? I asked my wife, who has a degree in cognitive science from MIT. She said, paraphrasing slightly, [...]

From my own experience: I've just heard it once, that this would be the way to face enemies that chase you in a dream. And when I had one of those rare scary dreams of mine, where I got chased and attacked with knives, I suddenly became lucid, when I was really out of breath from all the running action, and I remembered that advice right away, turned around, went towards the attacker and hugged him. And as I expected he stopped attacking me, but on top of that he started to cry. So I asked him what he wanted and he answered still crying that he wanted to be loved by me. I was touched, as you can imagine and really hugged him this time, waking up happily.
Sorry for the language in case of any faults,
meet you in dreamland...

This is exactly how I've been able to make nearly all of my progress in personal development. It's my belief that fear can serve as a guide for what you should be doing to improve your life.

Thank you for this post Erin! :)

Man, this dream is really full of hyper detail and lucid drama. I do believe that facing ones fears in dream can trigger something which leads to our being able to act courageously in our waking state. Thanks for the post. Cheers

A couple dream links

Erin Pavlina has an interesting account of her battles with fear in her lucid dreams. She puts to practice what Tholey recommends and does it in a very concrete, vivid way.

My god Erin, your stranger then Steve! :P

Do you think that facing fearsome things in dreams are somehow metaphorically linked to facing fears in real life?

With the exception of a few dreams as a toddler, I always faced those fears head on. Its kind of strange when it happens, because in real life I don't think Ax murderers, Snakes and Lions would be so chatty :)

Fighting your fears takes courage and this wonderful asset is in short supply for some people. I've discovered courage and started training it slowly... BUT how would someone with a low level of consciousness even believe you when you tell them that is possible to put up a good fight? The only way I could think of is personal example... but I'm soo far from being an example...

It is nice to say "fight your fears" but taking them on without weapons is like taking on a grizzly bear empty handed.

A great account of how you dealt with fear in dreams. I've written a couple small posts about this topic, but your account spells out the concept of embracing fear more clearly than I've seen in the past.

I also enjoyed your podcast on lucid dreaming tremendously.

Thanks.

Hi Erin. Many thanks for that story about Freddie and your dreams. Your story reminded me about some of my own experiences and realisations in the past, which people can read about (if they're interested) in my post of Angels and Demons. I look forward to more of your stories.
