Question: When I see a person in a dream, how can I distinguish whether it’s really him (his subconscious, higher self or whatever) or a figment of my own imagination? Is there a reliable way?

Answer: Most of the characters in your dreams are going to be constructs of your own subconscious mind. There will be no other consciousness in your dream except you, so anyone else you see there is just a manifestation of your subconscious.

However, dreams are an excellent place to meet up with other conscious beings including your higher self, your spirit guides, angels, ascended masters, celestial beings, and even deceased relatives. You could also meet up with your friends in a dream, but this is extraordinarily rare as it is extremely difficult to sync up your dreams and brainwaves, and most people lack the skills necessary to share dreams with other sleeping people.

In my own experience, I have met up with deceased relatives who have passed on some information to me. I’ve met with my spirit guides and higher self. And I’ve experienced a shared dream (where me and a friend were both having the same dream on the same night and seeing the dream from our own perspectives) a few times with a few select people under some very unusual circumstances. Like I said, that’s really rare.

If you are not lucid in your dream, chances are excellent that anyone else in there is a construct of your subconscious mind. If you’re not lucid and there is another conscious being in your dream, you’ll never know it.

On a few occasions my dreams have also been invaded by conscious entities that were not friendly. I repeat, not friendly! I got the heck out of there as fast as I could. They were crafty and well versed in the art of energy siphoning. If this paragraph causes you to back up, freak out, or decide I’m nuts, then you haven’t been experimenting enough on the dream plane. Not that you necessarily should, mind you, but for those in the advanced class I wanted to mention it.

The dream plane is an in-between place. Think of it like a launching pad to go exploring in many different directions. Be mindful of who is in there with you.

Now, all that said, some people report having intense conversations with me in their dreams and people want to know if it’s my higher self they’re having the conversation with. That is possible. You could be having a dream with your friend in it and you feel like they are really there, but if your friend doesn’t remember the experience then you were probably with their higher self. It depends on the situation and the dream and how lucid you were and how conscious the other person seemed, but it is possible to communicate with the higher self of a friend of yours.

Bottom line is this: If you’re in a dream and you’re communicating with someone, it’s either a product of your subconscious mind, or you’re really communicating with them but if so they’ll remember the same dream the next day, or it’s their higher self. Without being in the dream with you it would be hard for me to say which of the three you’re experiencing. The clarity of the dream and communication and your level of lucidity are the best indicators of the reality of the conscious mind in there with you. The only reliable way to know if it was really a friend is if he tells you the same dream the next day.

In the meantime, dream responsibly. Learn lucid dreaming. Stay conscious. Be alert. And don’t let unfriendlies suck at your energy.

When you meditate do you find your mind wandering so much that you lose the meditative connection you’re trying to build? Do your thoughts run something like this: What should I make for dinner? I wonder if Joey forgot his lunchbox. Don’t forget to pay the electric bill today. Oh where was I? Right, I was climbing my celestial staircase to talk to my guides. Must pay attention. 36, 37, 38… Oh shoot, I forgot to pick up Bill’s dry cleaning. He’s going to be pissed. Maybe I’ll have time to get it between my tennis game and lunch…

Distracting thoughts during meditation are extremely common. If you want to reach a higher vibration so that you can have a chat with your guides you’ll need to learn how to tune out distractions and tune in to the higher frequencies. So how do you do that? There are several ways.

Get it all out first
Make a list of all the things you need to do so you won’t forget them. Tune in to what you need to do that day and get it all down on paper. Take your time and do it right. Then trust that everything you need to remember is on that list. Set it aside and prepare for meditation.

Turn on some relaxation music
Meditation music is wonderful. There are so many CDs out there that you really can’t go wrong. I love R. Brian Caldwell’s music and I use it to tune in during readings and meditation. It gives me an aural focal point to help my mind from becoming distracted. Play it softly in the background.

Create a sacred space for meditation
Some people find it helpful to have a special place they use solely for meditation. Some pillows on the floor, a yoga mat, a certain chair in the house. Selecting one single place where you always meditate will help you create an anchor so that when you sit there, your mind automatically goes into meditation mode. Don’t do anything else in this spot like talking on the phone, journaling, etc. Just save the space for meditation.

Concentrate on your breathing
Breathing is an important component of meditation. Typically you want to breathe in through your nose for a certain count, like 4 or 6, and then breathe out slowly through your mouth for a few beats longer than that. I personally am not a big fan of controlled meditative breathing as I actually find it distracting to try to keep the count. So what I do is take three deep breaths to center myself then I just breathe deeply and deliberately without trying to hold my breath for any certain length of time. You can concentrate on breathing without making it an exercise in holding your breath. During your meditation just keep breathing through your nose and out through your mouth. If your nasal passages are blocked it’s okay to just breathe through your mouth, and if you suffer from dry mouth it’s also okay to breathe in and out through your nose. There’s really no wrong way to breathe during meditation. As long as you keep breathing, you’re good!

Count
One thing I do count is stairs. When you meditate, you have the option of putting yourself in a quiet, centered, peaceful state with the intention of just being in the present moment. If that’s your goal, you won’t need to count; just breathe. But usually when I meditate, it’s with the goal of connecting with spirit guides, my higher self, angels, Source, or a deceased person. In that case I have to raise my frequency, or my vibration. To do that, I select a metaphorical way of climbing: stairs, an escalator, or an elevator if I’m in a hurry. I prefer the stairs though. So while I’m doing my meditative deep breathing, I am counting the stairs as I go up them. This keeps my mind from wandering as I have to focus on the count to get it right. If I’m in an elevator I watch the buttons light up from 1 to 100 and keep count of them as I go. It accomplishes the same thing. When I use an escalator I count to 10 while I’m on the escalator and then stop off of that one and onto another one that takes me still higher for another count of 10. It all accomplishes the same goal and keeps my mind from wandering.

Guided meditation
Another way to keep your mind on your meditation is to listen to a guided meditation program. In these programs someone else is telling you where you are, what you see, what you hear and feel, etc. As you listen and concentrate on what they’re saying, you won’t have time for distractions. Guided meditations are great when you’re just starting out and aren’t sure where to go in your mind. Later you can create your own meditation ritual with your own locales, scenes, and sounds.

Acknowledge the thoughts and let them go
Even with a lot of practice you can still end up with the random thought passing through your mind while trying to meditate. That’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up about it. Let the thought come, acknowledge it, and then let it go. Get right back to what you were doing, you don’t need to start over. If you try too hard to prevent thoughts from coming in, you won’t be relaxed enough to meditate or reach a higher vibration.

***

Meditation is a wonderful tool you can use to bring peace to your life or to connect with your spirit guides, higher self, angels, and even Source. Don’t let distracting thoughts stop you from learning to meditate. Just learn how to handle them when they appear. With practice you’ll find yourself getting less and less distracted and more and more in tune.

Question: My husband keeps dreaming that he’s going to die. The dreams are the same and quite detailed. Does this mean it’s going to happen? He’s seriously freaked out.

Answer: No it doesn’t mean he’s going to die. If dreaming about future death was a sure sign of impending doom I’d have been dead at 16, 18, 24, and 26, and the apocolypse would have happened 20 times by now. I’m not saying death dreams couldn’t be prophetic, just that it’s not likely. It may sometimes seem as if the universe has a sick sense of humor, but notifying people of their own demise is not something the universe messes around with. That would be cruel.

It’s hard to tell a prophetic dream from a fear dream sometimes. I’ve had dreams where I’ve received a warning about something negative that was going to happen to me and it did in fact come true. And I’ve had tons of dreams about visiting the future or witnessing my own death or the death of a loved one that haven’t come true at all. It is certainly unnerving when you dream something horrible and it feels like a premonition.

So why do these dreams come to us if they’re not premonitions? I think there are several possibilities. First, maybe you’re getting information about a possible future to warn you to take different action to avoid the outcome shown to you. Or perhaps you’re seeing an alternate reality where you do in fact die the way the dream shows you that you did. Maybe it’s just a fear dream. Maybe it’s just symbolic and needs interpreting. The trick is not to let a death dream cause you to fear death, because then you’re giving your power to something outside yourself that you have no control over, and that can send you into a tailspin where you never leave the house.

When Steve and I were in New York in 2007 I had a dream one night that my son, Kyle, was floating face down in our swimming pool and my parents, who were watching him while we were away, didn’t see him. In the dream I was screaming to them to notice he was in trouble but they couldn’t hear me. In the dream I was frantic trying to get to him to help him so he wouldn’t drown and die. I woke from that dream with my heart pounding and total fear in my mind. I felt like something bad was going to happen to Kyle. It was 6am New York time so it was only 3am back home in Vegas. I decided to call my father when it was closer to 8am his time and warn him to keep Kyle away from the swimming pool. But once we got going for the day I forgot to call my dad. Around noon New York time my father called me and said, “Erin, do you have a doctor nearby? Kyle was injured at school and they called and asked me to pick him up immediately and take him to a doctor.” I said, “Oh my God, what happened?” He said, “The kids were playing on the merry-go-round and Kyle was running alongside it when he tripped, fell, and rolled under the merry-go-round while it basically trampled all over him. By the time the teachers got to him it was too late. He apparently has a big bump on his head and a cut.” Kyle turned out to be okay and recovered pretty quickly. So… he didn’t drown, but he was injured. Was the dream a premonition and if so, why didn’t it show me him next to a merry-go-round? I don’t know.

You can play the doom game if you want, but ultimately you don’t want dreams to rob you of your power and authority over your own life. So my advice is to take them with a grain of salt. If you dream that at 2pm you’re going to electrocute yourself in the bathtub, don’t get in the bathtub at 2pm. Why tempt fate? But unless the universe is going to give you a signed, notarized, detailed account of your fate, don’t worry about your future. Live in the present.

Question: Supposedly when you lucid dream you can be or create whatever you want. Is it limited to what you already know, or can you learn new things? I mean we can’t fly but we know if we move our ‘wings’ we will fly. But say I know nothing about the Japanese language and in a lucid dream I take Japanese lessons. Could the teacher teach me something I never knew and verify it in real life? And if I haven’t been to a country, but only know the name of it, and decide to check it out in a lucid dream, what would I see there? Something true about the country, or just my imagination of what it might look like?

Answer: Great question. When you dream, you are entering your own mind’s subconscious construct. Think of it like a matrix-like reality inside your head and you’re the programmer. As such, all the people, places, and things you see in a dream are created by your own subconscious mind. During normal, non-lucid dreams, you forget that you are dreaming. You act in accordance with whatever is going on in the dream. Yes, even though your own mind created the dream world, you go along with whatever is happening, even if you’re being chopped into little pieces by Freddy Krueger.

Now, when you are lucid in a dream (which means you are aware that you are dreaming) you are still in your own mind’s dream construct. So all the people, places, and things you see there were created by your subconscious mind. The difference between a normal, non-lucid dream and the lucid dream is that once you are lucid you are able to alter your dreamscape to suit your whims and desires. Thus, you can snap your fingers and now Freddy Krueger isn’t chopping you into little pieces, instead he’s sitting in an armchair with a cup of tea and a Dickens novel. But everything in the lucid dream is still a subset of your own mind. If you can imagine it, you can create it.

Can you fly? Yes, you can fly like Superman or put wings on your back and fly the way you think you would fly if you had wings. But we can’t really know if what we’re experiencing is how it would feel in reality.

So to use your examples, if you lucidly created a Japanese teacher to come teach you Japanese, you would get what sounds like Japanese to you, but which would probably not be real Japanese since your subconscious and conscious minds don’t know Japanese. If you flew to another country you would see what you think would be there. There might be enough similarity in what you think is there and what is actually there to convince you that you really saw that country, but it would be coincidence.

For the vast majority of people, everything experienced in a dream, lucid or not, is going to contain a subset of what the dreamer already knows or believes. There’s nothing new under the sun.

All hope is not lost, however. Lucid dreaming does open a doorway. It alters your energetic frequency. If you’ve developed your psychic abilities enough and you know how to change your frequency to detect other energetic beings, you could use your lucid dream landscape to hold a meeting of sorts between you and these other beings. These other beings could then give you information you didn’t previously know, which is the same thing that happens when a psychic is awake and using her conscious mind to tune in to beings outside her mind’s construct. Does that make sense? If a psychic person can tune in to an outside mind while she is awake and have a conversation with that being, you can do the same thing in a lucid dream. You just have to escape the dream construct to do it. You have to make sure you keep your frequency high and don’t fall back into a non-lucid state.

One of the reasons deceased spirits come to us in our dreams is because energetically we’re meeting them halfway. It’s much easier for them to get into our dreams than our waking life. When you’re in the dream state you already expect weird and unusual things to happen. You accept them easily while you’re dreaming. So deceased spirits or guides can use that as an opportunity to try to reach you with messages. Initiating the conversation yourself works too. You can “call” to them and hopefully they will come. No guarantees. But you’d have to be lucid at the very minimum in order to make this call, otherwise you’re just making the call inside your own subconscious mind.

In summary, your dreams are a product of your own mind. Everything in your dream came from your imagination. But if you’re lucid, and can raise your vibration, and break out of the dreamscape, you can communicate and have interactions with real energetic beings that are not a product of your own mind. Or you can learn to do that while awake, which is sometimes easier.

Obtaining consciousness inside your dreams is an excellent first step to being able to go outside your own mind and into a higher frequency.

Last year, to clear my Ask Erin inbox, I decided to post a bunch of quick answers to quick questions. I’m going to do that again. These are questions I can answer easily but don’t really warrant their own blog entry. I figure a quick answer now is better than a long answer never. So here we go…

Question: What do you think about Indigo children?
Answer: I’m not big on the whole label thing. Crystal, indigo, purple, polka dots, plaid, it’s all the same to me. Some children are pre-wired to be more aware and connected to their higher selves, and some aren’t. Some kids are incarnating with specific missions and specific purposes that will have a global impact. But you know what? They’ve been doing that for eons. Now we have a pretty label. If you need to categorize your child, that’s your choice.

Question: Do you believe in astrology or horoscopes?
Answer: I am not an expert at astrology and I haven’t investigated it enough to comment on whether I think it is real or not. I suggest you talk to astrology experts and get their take on astrology. I’m a Cancer with Libra rising and a Virgo moon, though. If anyone knows what that means, contact me.

Question: If I have to have an abortion to save my life, is that a sin?
Answer: No.

Question: Is levitation possible? If so, do you know how I can do it or who I can learn from? Have you ever done it?
Answer: I have never levitated. Like you I’ve heard tales of this ability. I would start with the people who claim to be able to do it and go from there. Report back when you find out something.

Question: How can I use the law of attraction and the law of detachment at the same time without canceling each other out?
Answer: With the law of attraction you want to get clear on your intention and become a vibrational match for it. The law of detachment is about not being attached to a certain outcome. Think of the story of the man in the flood who is sitting on his roof waiting to be rescued. He wants to be rescued and thinks God is going to save him. People come in a boat and helicopter to save him but he resists their attempts and says, “No no, it’s okay. God will save me.” When he gets to Heaven he complains and God says, “I sent you a boat and a helicopter. What more did you want?” The man was a vibrational match for being rescued but he was attached to that manifesting a certain way (e.g. the mighty hand of God). Cast your intention out upon the water and let the universe decide how best to manifest the details. You might be getting what you asked for and not even be noticing it.

Question: Do you think climate change will be a huge problem people have to deal with in the future?
Answer: Sure. Climates change, people adapt. If you want to know more about this, consult a professional in the field.

Question: Are we ever going to be finished incarnating? When does it stop?
Answer: When you no longer choose to “play the game” it stops. Every incarnation is your choice. Every time you come here, you learn.

Question: Can spirit guides or angels contact you in “human” form?
Answer: I have never experienced this so I can’t say for sure, but I think that in a severe situation an angel can take human form, but not a spirit guide. I think it’s more likely, however, that they urge and nudge an already incarnated human to help you out when you’re in trouble. Read Spirit Guides at Starbucks.

Question: If I know something bad is going to happen to someone but they won’t listen to me, and it happens, am I somehow responsible?
Answer: You are not responsible for anyone’s life. Divest yourself of the idea that you can cause anyone to do anything. People make their own choices. Some may choose to listen to you and some won’t. Having foreknowledge of an event means you can help them, but if they don’t want to listen, there’s nothing you can do. Try not to feel guilty. You did the best you could.

Question: Can you affect physical reality while in a lucid dream? Like turning on a television in a dream causes it to turn on in real life?
Answer: No. When you are lucid dreaming you are in the dream plane, the dream construct, which is inside your mind. However, if you were astral instead of just in a lucid dream, then yes you could affect physical reality here on our plane. Difficult but definitely possible. Astral project responsibly, young man!

Question: How can I get an astral sword like the one you made when you were younger and kicking demon butt?
Answer: Visit my astral store. Due to high demand we’ve just started stocking astral swords. Just teasing. Truthfully, you create your astral sword as an extension of your energy and intent. You’ll need to use willpower and some of your astral essence to form it.

Question: Is it possible to recognize someone in this life as someone you knew in a past life?
Answer: Absolutely. Souls can recognize each other. It’s a beautiful thing really. How will you know? You’ll just know. You may not know who they were to you but that’s not as important as recognizing them. Er, unless you’ve got some karma to work out with them and then you should watch your back.

Question: What is my higher self doing while I’m in this incarnation?
Answer: Watching, guiding, helping, and maybe chortling a little bit.

Question: How can you claim to be psychic when everyone knows all psychics are frauds?
Answer: You again? I thought I got rid of you in my last Quick Answers to Quick Questions.

Question: I need to contact my deceased father. Can you help?
Answer: Yes, book a reading.
Question: Is my mom okay? She died recently.
Answer: I’m sure she’s fine, but if you want to communicate with her through me you can book a reading.
Question: Can you tell my dad on the other side I love him?
Answer: You can tell him yourself. He will hear you more strongly than me because of your connection with him.
Question: My dog recently crossed over. Did he make it?
Answer: I’m sure he’s fine but if you want you can book a reading with me and we’ll find out together.
Question: If I book a reading with you, will you be able to connect me with my deceased (mother, father, sister, aunt, uncle, cousin, pet?)
Answer: I’ll try. No guarantee they will come through. But we’ll give it a shot.

Question: Do you need my birth date and the location where I was born to do my reading?
Answer: Not remotely. I don’t even need to know your name. I just need your voice and a photo (or to be in person with you). I connect through the energy of your voice or body. During a reading you can ask about other family members and I do not need their photo or their voice as I will already be connected to YOUR guides. But photos help me tune in and you’ll get a lot more information if you send me a photo of everyone you want to ask about.

Question: Can you tell during a reading if my spouse is cheating on me?
Answer: I’ve noticed the guides have a tendency to not want to reveal concealed information. It’s there for a reason. You may need to take action to discover it on your own. But often they will tell my sitters if they have good reason to suspect something like that is going on.

Question: I don’t want to have kids. Is that alright?
Answer: Yes. Knowing what you want in life is really important. If you don’t want children you shouldn’t have any. You’re not broken.

Question: I really want to talk to my deceased mother. How would I go about doing that and knowing it’s real?
Answer: When we know the person it can be hard to get validation. That’s why mediumship is so great. If you go to a medium and they are able to tell you something they couldn’t possibly have known, you get your validation. When we’re trying to tune in to our own deceased relatives, that’s much harder. You are the only one who can determine if the energy you’re feeling is really them or not. For me, I rely on “the dreams.” These are the ones where you just know their consciousness is really there communicating with you.

Question: I don’t believe in lucid dreaming. It just doesn’t seem possible to be awake in a dream. Can you prove it’s real?
Answer: I find this question so odd I don’t even know how to answer it. It’s like asking me if peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are real. Go have one for yourself and you’ll have your answer. Until then, I wouldn’t go around telling people you don’t believe in lucid dreaming. It just makes you look dumb.

Question: Can you tell me who the spirit is who is throwing stuff at me in my trailer?
Answer: Book a reading.

Question: Is there a reason psychics tend to work independently of each other? Is it jealousy?
Answer: Another odd question. That’s like asking why three surgeons aren’t performing your appendectomy at the same time. You only need one psychic if they’re good. Remember that different psychics have different specialties, though, so find one that specializes in the way you need. Just like you wouldn’t ask your podiatrist to perform heart surgery, so too you shouldn’t go to a medium if you want career advice, and you shouldn’t go to an astrologer if you want to communicate with your deceased mother.

Question: Why do you charge so much for readings? You can still make a good living if you charged only 30% as much as you currently do.
Answer: My prices are based on value and demand. If I cut the reading price to 30% of what it is now, my waiting list would seriously be a year long. Can you imagine needing a reading today and having to wait a year to get it? The most popular psychic mediums have waiting lists that span 3-5 years! There are plenty of psychics in the sea. Find one in your price range. If you feel a specific psychic is what you want, pay them their asking price. If they’re able to charge so much and still get tons of business, chances are they’re worth their price. You get what you pay for and quality counts.

Question: Is Bigfoot real?
Answer: I have no knowledge in this area. But if you see him, let me know.

Question: Will my boyfriend marry me and will my family be well off financially?
Answer: Book a reading. The short answer, though, is that if you want something you’re responsible for making it happen.

Question: Can you help me find my missing Ipod, camera, wedding ring, cat, etc…?
Answer: First you need to know why it got lost in the first place. What lesson are you being taught? Or you need to learn how to keep track of your things better. Seriously, I don’t find missing objects. But there are psychics who specialize in this area. If it were me, I’d start with logic, then move on to intuition, and then prayer. One of them will probably work.

Question: Do you believe in aliens, abductions, UFO’s and all that sort of thing?
Answer: I want to answer this question very badly but the time is not right and there’s a chip in my head preventing me. Someone help me.

Question: How do I know if my loved one crossed over?
Answer: Book a reading. Most of the deceased people I’ve been in contact with are fully crossed over, but I do sometimes encounter someone who is resisting that. Usually in the case of suicide. If I can get them “on the line” so to speak then we’ll know for sure.

Question: My soul mate died recently and I have not felt her energy since she crossed over. I am so sad over her loss and was expecting to feel her around me a lot since I’m very open to that sort of thing. Where is she? Is she lost?
Answer: When we cross over we aren’t automatically able to project our energy back to this physical frequency so easily. It takes skill, time, and patience. I’ve seen guides bring through recently deceased people because they can’t come through on their own just yet. And I’ve also encountered extremely strong spirits who can easily communicate with me shortly after they’ve died. Give it some time. Send her love energy. She’s not likely lost.

Well that’s it for now folks. Feels good to clear out some of those questions! If you have a question that hasn’t already been answered, feel free to submit it. Remember that Ask Erin questions are answered publicly, not privately, and there’s no guarantee your question will be chosen. The best way to get an answer is to send a short question whose answer will benefit many. If you really need to hear from me directly, use my Contact Form or book a reading. Current wait times are 3-5 weeks.

Be at peace. Be kind. Express love.

Although I’m an advanced lucid dreamer, able to program and create a dream I want to have ahead of time, even I am amazed and intrigued by what’s been happening to me lately.

I’ve had some crazy dreams in the past. For example, one time I dreamed I was Eddie Murphy’s penis. Yep, you read that right, I hope you didn’t spit your coffee onto your monitor. I seriously had a dream that I was Eddie Murphy’s penis (oh the search engine traffic I’m going to collect with that lovely phrase!). I peaked my head out of his underwear and had a look around. That was it, then I mercifully woke up. Another crazy dream was when I dreamed I was a sentient hamburger (with all the fixings no less!). Yep, I was sitting on a lazy Susan-type device while someone was setting up lighting for a photo shoot. I just sat there, feeling every part of my layers (meat, lettuce, special sauce, etc.) and just waiting for someone to take photos of me.

Until recently the dream that took the cake for crazy was that one night I went to sleep and dreamed I had insomnia! I literally dreamed I couldn’t fall asleep. When I woke from that dream I was flummoxed, but when I went back to sleep the dream picked up where it left off! In fact, I kept dreaming I couldn’t sleep and then I’d wake up and realize I must have been sleeping. Finally at around 5am I realized I wasn’t going to get any real sleep, so the next time I fell asleep I dreamed that I took a walk around the neighborhood until sunrise. When I finally got up for real that day I felt like I hadn’t slept all night. Try analyzing that one!

But recently my dreams have gone to another level entirely. It started when I dreamed an entire episode of the tv show Supernatural. I watched a complete brand new episode of the show in my dream. The plot was so interesting I thought it would be a great idea for an actual episode. I wanted to submit it to Eric Kripke (show creator) but my cousin, who is in the industry, told me there was no way he’d be interested. I’m a huge fan of the show, for obvious reasons, and I often program dreams that include the Winchester boys and I out solving a mystery or hunting down something scary. But now… now… it’s all different!

A few months ago I had my Supernatural episode dream but this time it came with commercial breaks and scenes to next week’s episode! What the hell? Now I’ve got sponsors in my dream? I don’t believe I’m getting paid to watch commercials in my dream! And yet it continues. Apparently I signed some astral contract and now I get fresh episodes of Supernatural in my dreams plus commercials. So far the scenes to next week’s episode haven’t actually come to pass. If they did I think I might commit myself or pitch a series idea to Eric Kripke or the CW. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy dreaming entire episodes, but maybe I need to install an astral Tivo so I can fast forward through the commercials. If anyone reading this knows Eric Kripke can you please tell him I’ve got a season’s worth of new episodes in my head?

Another weird thing going on in my dreams is that I’m doing intuitive reading sessions for strangers. Full readings. My guides give me a name and I tune in and do a reading. Sometimes I see the sitter there and sometimes I don’t. These aren’t quickie, one question readings either, they’re a full 30 minutes (or it feels that way in the dream). A lot of information comes through. And not just one client either, but sometimes as many as three clients in one dream session. When I wake up I wonder, and hope, that somewhere there is a real person who received the info through their dream, considering the effort that was put into it.

There are nights when I just want to sleep and not be so, oh what’s the word, involved in my dreaming. I think I need to program a dream trip to Hawaii so I can lounge on the beach and sip a drink with one of those cute umbrellas (because it’s not tropical without an umbrella or some fruit hanging off the rim) just so I can relax a little. You think you’re overworked? Try doing hours of work in your dreams too!

Now lest you think I’m kavetching or whining about my lucid dreaming abilities, I do really love my nightlife and look forward to it every day. I am just trying to fathom what’s going to happen next. Should I be worried or excited? Where will the next level take me?

I get a lot of emails from people who have had strong, powerful, clear dreams that something disastrous is coming. Some dream that their deceased relative tells them someone in the family is going to die. Some dream of world disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes. Some dream something pleasant like a future wedding to the person they love. But how can you tell if a dream you have is prophetic?

I’ve had many dreams that had some element of future prediction in them. And I’ve had dreams that felt very real but nothing ever came of them. So while I know that dreams can be prophetic, I also know that not every disaster dream is a portent. I have found no way to discern when a dream I’ve had is an actual sending (a portent of things to come sent from beings with a higher perspective than I have) or just a regular dream, except that sometimes the portent dreams have a more lucid feel to them.

In one instance I had a dream that an uncle called me. I hadn’t spoken to this particular uncle on the phone in probably 5 years, but in the dream he called me out of the blue to tell me he had cancer and was dying. I was very upset when I woke up. A few hours later, my phone rang and it was this very same uncle! A chill went through me. He never called me so why was he calling now? I was certain he was about to tell me he had cancer and was dying, but in fact he was simply calling to find out if I was planning to drive in to L.A. for our family’s thanksgiving celebration. So what was that? I seemed to accurately pick up on the fact that he was going to call me (after 5 years with no contact), but the content of the dream after that was not true. It’s too much of a coincidence to discount entirely.

In another dream, my deceased grandfather came to me and told me I was going to have a miscarriage. This is something I wrote about in my blog entry, A Visit from Grandpa. What he told me in my dream turned out to be very true. That was a sending.

But I’ve had plenty of dreams about earthquakes, floods, meteor showers, and other disasters that have never come true. Dreams that were very powerful and made me think they were impending disasters, but nothing came of them. I’ve also had dreams of people in my family dying and they are still here years later.

If you have a dream where a deceased loved one is warning you of the impending death of a member of your family it might be a true portent or it might not. I wish I had some way of telling you how you can discern the difference, but I haven’t found a reliable method myself. It would be easier if all such dreams never came true because then we could conclude that dreams are not windows to the future. But I’ve had enough dreams come true to know it’s possible to pick up and receive accurate and correct information about a future event. Sometimes the precognitive dreams have a different feeling to them, but it’s hard to describe and isn’t always consistent.

So what should you do if you have a powerful dream that leaves you feeling emotionally distraught because you fear something terrible is about to happen? Do the best you can to prevent it, I suppose. It can’t hurt. Make some calls, check on your relatives, buy supplies to ride out a disaster, change your plane reservation. You can only do so much. You don’t want to give your power away to an event that may or may not ever happen, so be cautious but optimistic. Be prepared but don’t go crazy.

If you want to have more prophetic dreams, work on your ability to recall your dreams, meditate before you go to bed to raise your vibration, work on your psychic development, learn lucid dreaming, and pay attention to the different feelings you have in your dreams so you can start to categorize them.

Steve has posted the podcast on his site. Read his blog entry to see a list of topics we cover in the program. We may do something like this again since it was fun and relatively fast.

Enjoy!

People often ask me if it’s possible to share a dream with someone else. I have had several experiences where I had the same dream as someone else, but when I really thought about it I realized that all of them had a supernatural or paranormal element to them. So I started to wonder if we were having the same dream or if we were just having the same astral-oriented experience, outside of the dream plane. My jury was out in regards to dream sharing. However, recently I did have an experience that included a shared dream that also included some precognitive elements. This is what happened…

I received permission from my friend to share this story however I have changed the names to protect their privacy. All details except the names are true.

In the dream there were four scenes. In the first scene I was hanging out with my friend Anna and her family. They were preparing to have a family portrait taken. Her son and his wife and kids had flown in from out of town so finally everyone was together. While we all waited, Anna’s daughter, Samantha, decided at the last minute that she didn’t want to take part in the family photo and walked off in a huff. Anna was really upset as it had taken a lot of effort to set this up and her daughter was basically ruining it for everyone. As she ran off to convince her daughter to pose in the photo I made a comment to Anna’s son, “Does this happen often?” to which he replied, “Only when Samantha’s involved.”

Now the second sequence in the dream: While waiting for Anna and her family to resolve their family issues, I went to visit my mom who was throwing a party. At the party she was spending so much time talking to all her friends that she actually missed out on eating. She was hungry so she kept asking the wait staff if they could please bring her meal back out.

Third sequence: Now I’m back with Anna’s family and I see her son sitting with a friend who I knew was 22 years old. The friend hit on me and I said, “You know I’m 47 right?” Then I realized I wasn’t actually 47 so I said, “No wait, actually I’m 38 (my true age).” He replied in a slightly lecherous tone, “Doesn’t bother me one bit! I like older women and you’ve got quite a rack.” I was insulted and flattered at the same time. Anna’s son is actually in his mid-20’s but in the dream I knew he was still in the Air Force academy and that he and his friend were 22.

Fourth sequence: I decide it’s time for me to go and Anna’s husband Richard says he’ll walk me to my car. While we were walking the scene changed a little and I now I’m in the desert with Richard and some military types. I’m in a secret underground military base in the desert and I’m seeing things I’m sure I’m not supposed to see. Civilians in makeshift prisons, small spindly humanoid creatures running around, and some bug-like creatures that were pretty scary looking. Richard comes up to me and says, “Look, you really weren’t supposed to see any of this, you don’t have the clearance. They’re going to detain and debrief you for 24 hours and then they’re going to make you sign this non-disclosure confidentiality agreement. If you refuse to sign it, they’ll keep you here until you do so you might as well sign it and get on with your life. They’ll give you lie detector tests periodically to make sure you haven’t said anything to anyone about what you’ve seen here. If you do, you’ll be charged with treason. Trust me, they’re serious so I suggest you just sign it.”

I woke up. The whole dream left me feeling really odd. I felt like I was witnessing things that were really not my business.

So that morning I’m driving the kids to school and my daughter is on the phone with Grammy, my mom. I can hear Grammy say, “Oh Emily, I had the strangest dream last night. I dreamed I was at this party and I spent so much time talking to my friends that I missed the meal service. I spent the rest of the dream trying to find some food.” WHAT!? I grabbed the phone and got the story directly. She dreamed what I saw her doing… trying to find food at the party and missing out because she was talking too much. That was too weird. That’s a shared dream.

So I call my friend Anna to discuss the other pieces of the dream. To my great shock she told me that the first sequence with the photography fiasco actually happened a couple of days prior. Indeed, her daughter refused to be in the photo at the last minute offering a somewhat lame excuse for why she couldn’t be in the photo. I was so surprised that this actually happened. I guess that’s not pre-cognitive, it was post-cognitive. I picked up on something that had already happened.

So I told Anna the next sequence about her son and his friend in the Air Force academy. She thought back and remembered that her son did indeed have a friend at that time who was, for lack of a better word, always hitting on older women. It’s a small thing and we can’t totally verify that I saw the same guy she’s thinking of. If only I had gotten the guy’s name, that would have been something. But both Anna and her son knew exactly who I was talking about when I talked to both of them.

The fourth sequence with the underground military base we can’t totally verify, but Anna confirms that her husband, Richard, was heavily involved in top secret military missions in the Nevada desert, and that he was always debriefed, had to sign non-disclosure agreements and take lie detector tests because of it.

I’ve had dreams of this nature related to this family before. Once I dreamed that they had a leak in their ceiling and water was dripping all over Anna’s bed. She told me that that had indeed happened many years ago, long before I ever met her. I think there is a strong psychic connection between me and Anna and members of her family.

What really surprised me was having the same dream about my mom that she had about herself. Wondering if this was happening more often than I thought, Steve and I have started sharing tidbits from our dreams each morning to see if we’re having any of the same dreams. This morning we both reported having a dream about our old martial arts instructor whom neither of us have had contact with for probably 8 or 9 years. That was odd.

So what does it all mean? Is dream sharing possible? I think it definitely is. Is one person picking up on the dream of another? Or are both having the same dream on their own? I’ll bet both are possible. I think that the fact that I am so aware of my dreams and also so intuitive offers me the opportunity to dream-share more often. I am intending to continue exploring this more proactively.

If you ever have a dream about me, please email it to me the next day if you can. I want to see if I can correlate your dream with anything I dreamed the night before.

In any case, the whole subject is fascinating. If we can share dreams I wonder if we can have lucid communication in a dream that is actually received and remembered by both parties. I enjoy exploring possibilities such as this.

Does anyone else have a shared dream experience they’d like to relate? Please post in the forums or contact me privately.

Do you own a dream encyclopedia or a dream dictionary? Throw it out! I’m serious. Using a dream dictionary to try to interpret your dreams is like reading the Sunday horoscope in your newspaper. Are we really supposed to believe that all Aries on the planet are going to have friendship conflicts on the same day? Or all Libras should kick up their feet with a good book this weekend? Likewise, just because you dream you’re on a train going through a tunnel doesn’t mean you’re having a sex dream.

Dream interpretation is not about universal symbols. To interpret your dreams you need to understand what the dream elements mean to you. I’ll expand on this in a moment.

In junior high I made a study of dreams for a science fair project. I learned how to interpret dreams and started doing it for all my friends, and even my teachers. As the years went by I just got better and better at it. It’s hard to interpret someone else’s dream without knowing the person really well, so usually I have to ask questions to elicit the information I need for a proper interpretation. I can’t just automatically assign a meaning to a dream symbol based on some universal interpretation.

Interpreting my own dreams is very easy for me because I know me so well. The other night I had a dream about a lilac bush with a bunch of bees on it. One dream dictionary I looked up online says it means good luck is coming my way. That’s not what it meant to me though. Earlier that day I was sitting at a red light and looked over to my left where I saw a lilac bush with bees buzzing around it. I am really afraid of bees and I remember feeling glad I was in my car with the windows closed so one didn’t buzz in. So dreaming about bees in a lilac bush was simply my subconscious mind reliving a fearful experience from earlier in the day. If a florist had the same dream, it would mean something else. If a beekeeper had the same dream, I’m sure it wouldn’t have the same meaning as it did for me.

There are common dream themes, however. When I first learned about dreams I read that there were eight of them actually. These eight dream themes are supposedly so common that most people will have all of these dreams at some point in their lives. They are:

Dreams of falling

Dreams of flying

Dreams of finding money (usually coins)

Dreams of losing money

Dreams of being naked in public

Dreams of losing your teeth or having them fall out

Dreams about being chased

Sex dreams

But just because you have a dream that falls into a common theme category doesn’t mean it will have the same meaning for you that it will for someone else. If you’re a dentist and you dream that your teeth are falling out it could mean that you feel inadequate as a dentist, or you feel like you’re a fraud, or you feel like you want to stop being a dentist … or any number of interpretations.

In order to interpret your dreams properly you have to know what the dream symbols mean to you.

Let’s take an example. The dream is that you are sitting on your couch when all of a sudden you feel something slithering around your body, and you hear a rattling sound. In a moment, you see it’s a rattlesnake!

Are you afraid of snakes or do you like them? If you’re afraid of them then I might suggest you are coming face to face with a fear. Or I might suggest you feel like you are in the grip of fear.

If, on the other hand, you love snakes, the dream will have a different meaning. Maybe it’s an expression of courage. Maybe the snake in the dream reminds you of a deceased pet snake you had and you’re happy to see it.

The emotion you feel from a dream is the most telling element of what the dream means. It’s important to identify how the dream made you feel. Often it’s difficult to figure out what each and every symbol in a dream means. But knowing the emotion is probably the most critical element. Did you feel sad, angry, overwhelmed, depressed, defeated, afraid, overjoyed, hopeful? That alone can be enough of an interpretation.

A great technique to figure out what your dream means is to tell it to someone else. The words you use are often indicative of the meaning. Example: I was with my father and then all of a sudden his head just came flying off. “Hmm, did you have a fight with your father the other day?” “Why yes, I did, and he really just flew off the handle. Oh, I get it… ”

Try this one: I dreamed I was in a boat and was floating gently down a stream. All of a sudden there was a thunderstorm and lightning and the river started moving more swiftly. I felt like I was out of control, like I couldn’t get control of my boat. All I wanted to do was get back to safer waters, but I saw rocks ahead and knew I was going to crash. When I woke up I was so anxious.

Now let’s take the same dream and describe it a different way so you can see how the emotion is different even with the same elements. Dream: I dreamed I was in this boat and was floating meekly down the stream. But a powerful thunderstorm was brewing; I could just feel it’s power. Then lightning struck and all of a sudden I was barrelling down the river faster than I ever had before. I could easily see the obstacles ahead of me but I was so powerful that I knew I could easily face and overcome them.

In the first dream, our dreamer is expressing anxiety over something in their life that probably happened suddenly, without warning, that is scaring them. Our dreamer is not feeling in control of his life and probably wants things to go back to the way they were. He thinks tragedy looms before him.

Our second dreamer is having a different experience. He went from being meek to getting a great idea that is propelling him forward in life. He is feeling courage and power, not anxiety, about the obstacles ahead.

Telling your dream to your partner or a friend is a good idea. The words you choose are often insightful. Sometimes I’ll tell Steve a dream that was very emotional for me and he can interpret it as I go because he’s hearing the words, not seeing the images I saw. While I’m caught up in just describing the scene, he is hearing my words. This works when you write it down in a dream journal too.

It takes practice to interpret your dreams. You’ve got to just keep working at it.

Being able to intrepret dreams has actually helped me considerably with my psychic readings. When I tune in to the spirit guides they will often send me a metaphor for my sitter’s life and current circumstances. I have to figure out what the imagery means just by seeing the symbols. If I didn’t know how to interpret dreams I might be really lost.

Not all dreams require interpretation. Sometimes I will dream that someone calls me on the phone, tells me something, and hangs up. The message comes through cleanly and with no symbolism. Saves time.

Some dreams are communications from spirits or deceased relatives and also do not require much in the way of interpretation. And some dreams are premonitions so where you might see something symbolic it could be literal.

If you’re not used to remembering your dreams you may find them very disjointed in the beginning (e.g. “There was a flying monkey and then it was in my bath tub. A second later I was back in high school with my old boyfriend, Fred. He was annoying me. Then I saw that he had a butterfly tatoo, which started singing to me in Latin…”) Don’t be discouraged. Keep on dreaming! Share your dreams with a partner, or just say them out loud to yourself. The words you choose are important. In time you’ll get to know what your dreams mean to you. If you feel fear in your dream, ask yourself what you’re afraid of in your life. If you feel excited in a dream, ask yourself what you’re feeling excited about in your life, and so on.

But throw the dictionaries away. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Question: The other night I dreamed that my deceased grandfather came to me and we had an intriguing conversation. But when I woke up I forgot the details of what he told me, and I’m sure they were important. Is there any way to get the dream back or to have it repeat so I can find out what he said?

Answer: It’s very unlikely you’ll be able to get the dream back. But you may be able to ask him to appear to you again. Let him know out loud or in your mind that you do not remember his message and ask him to please come back with another one. It’s possible he will come again, but he may not.

For a spirit to communicate with someone incarnate they have to alter their energy, their vibration, and it’s not always easy. The incarnate person also has to be in a state to receive the message. It’s like both people have to be tuned to the same station on a radio for communication to take place.

Lucid dreaming is extremely helpful here. I know most people are not experts at lucid dreaming but I wanted to mention it in case you are. Next time you find yourself lucid in a dream, ask your grandfather to come to you with a message.

You can also try a simple meditation to reach him. Open your chakras and get them spinning nice and wide. Then imagine walking into a cottage in the woods and expect your grandfather to be there when you open the door. Have a conversation with him in your mind and see if what he says resonates with you.

If you never get the message, at least try to remember how the dream made you feel. Did you feel more peaceful when you woke up? Did you feel scared or agitated? Sometimes it’s not the words that are important but the feeling they invoke. The feeling can give you a clue to the message.

So last night I was tucking Emily in and she revealed to me how afraid she is all night long because of the monster under the bed. She told me she is afraid to go to the bathroom at night (her room comes with a bathroom so it’s very close), and when she really has to go she ends up running from the bathroom and leaping onto her bed so the monster won’t grab her feet. She also has told me that sometimes things in her room are in different places in the morning and she assumes the monster moved them.

I was at once very concerned but also very excited because I was being given the opportunity to help her move past her fear, just like I write about in my blog. Super psychic mom to the rescue!

First of all I told her there is no monster under her bed and that if there was I’d be able to see it. This is true actually. She told me to check and I did and there was no monster (i.e. negative entity or energy). She said the monster doesn’t come out until I leave. Okay, that’s logical. If I were a monster I would avoid me too.

I can’t tell my daughter that she is imagining this, and I can’t tell her that there is no such thing as monsters, because that wouldn’t be quite true. Never dismiss your child’s fear by telling them they are imagining something. It may well be that they are imagining it, but that is not always the case. Sometimes there really is something in their room for them to be afraid of, and if you dismiss their claims you are leaving them to deal with something powerful without the slightest clue how to handle it. Just because you can’t see or feel something doesn’t mean it’s not there. Children are generally far more open to paranormal activity than adults.

One of the reasons I could not tell my daughter she was imagining things is because, totally unknown to her, she has reported incidents occurring in her room at night that jive with what I “dream” is happening in her room on the same night. There have been too many of these coincidences for me to dismiss.

Since I could not convince my daughter that she was safe in her room at night, I decided to give her some tools to handle the situation, which is what I wished my mom had done for me. It may have saved me from peeing in my bed because I was too afraid to leave it. So first I told Emily how to change her emotional state before she goes to bed. Reading, talking on the phone with her very amusing Grammy, or just imagining she is going to Disneyland in the morning. That gave her a big smile on her face when I suggested it, but she said that feeling wouldn’t help her at 1 in the morning.

So I asked her if she had ever actually seen the monster under the bed, to which she replied “no.” Then I asked her if the monster under the bed had actually harmed her in some way. She thought about it and said “no.” So I intimated that maybe the monster wasn’t there and she only thought he was there. She said, “Then how come things in my room are in different places in the morning? It has to be the monster moving things.” So I said, “Well, is he putting them away? Maybe he’s trying to help you keep your room clean.” She said that he was not cleaning, just moving things. Darnit, because we could really use a cleaning monster in that room!

I wanted her to be able to get out of her bed at night and go to the bathroom if she needed to without being afraid. So I did what any caring, compassionate mommy would do … I taught her the Patronus Charm. I picked up one of her fairy wands and waved it in the air while shouting, “Expecto Patronum!” She was excited. I was too! I told her that the Patronus Charm would create a strong, ethereal light that would push the bad energy far far away. Now, this isn’t as silly as some of you might be imagining. Believing in the charm is half the power. I handed her the wand and taught her the strange magical incantation. She waved the wand, said “Expecto Patronum!” with all her might and whammo, a full grown stag came flying out of her wand! Okay, okay, it wasn’t a stag. It was just wishful thinking, but you should have seen her power and confidence wielding that wand! She started laughing with glee. “Oh Mommy,” she said, “I like doing magic!” Then she asked, “Does this really work?” I replied, “How do you feel now?” She said, “I feel powerful!” I said, “Then yeah, it worked!”

So then we practiced, as any good wizard should. After I was sure she had the proper wand movement down pat, I asked her to walk to her bathroom carrying her wand. As soon as she got to the dark bathroom she began to cringe and whine. Hmm. I decided a systematic desensitization might work. So I had her practice walking from her bathroom back to her bed without trying to leap over the monster grabby hands. Her first try was slow and she was obviously scared. I knew that feeling well. But I had her practice it about a dozen times, and she finally got so bored of the task that she hustled to her bed with only annoyance instead of fear. That’s what I was hoping would happen. Anger trumps fear.

Truth be told though, when I stood in her bathroom doorway with my back to the darkness I too felt something creepy. I “checked” the bathroom with my own senses and there was definitely something not right in there (besides all the toys in the bathtub and the towels on the floor). I did a quick banishment of anything in that bathroom that didn’t belong there, but I’m going to have to do a little more work in there to see what that was and then clear it.

So now she’s back in bed and she’s got her wand on her nightstand, and by this time about 30 minutes has passed, and I’ve got some other things to do, so I’m anxious to get going. Then she says, “What do I do if something really bad comes into my room through the window and tries to take me out?” I told her to call on her personal angel, Claire, and to also call upon Archangel Michael and Metatron to help her. She wanted to know who was the most powerful, so I told her to call on Michael but that any of the three could do the job nicely. She practiced saying their names and finally she was ready to go to sleep.

This morning I asked her how she slept and if anything untoward happened last night. Here is her tale: “Well after you closed the door I got really afraid. So I called on Michael and I felt much better. Then I just started talking to myself, telling myself silly things and that made me laugh. So then I felt better and went to sleep.” I asked her if she had any encounters with the monster under the bed or if she had to go to the bathroom. She said, “I couldn’t remember that magic spell you told me. What was it again? Asbestos Petroleum?”

“Uh, no, honey. That would make your ceiling sticky,” I replied.

“Oh,” she said. Then she lit up, “Hey that sounds like fun! Can I make my ceiling sticky?”

“Uh, I’d rather you didn’t.”

“Drat,” she said as she ran off to play.

Mischief managed. For now…

People often tell me stories of being afraid of going to sleep at night because they either fear, or know, they are going to have a negative experience. Perhaps it’s an encounter with a negative entity, sleep paralysis, the monster under the bed, or just plain fear of the dark. Sometimes it’s an irrational fear, and sometimes the fear is justified. Sometimes there really is something lurking just out of your awareness ready to pounce when you go to sleep, and sometimes you’re just afraid because you watched a scary movie.

Sometimes these fears carry on into the daytime, but most of the time people are more afraid at night when they feel less capable of handling the unknown. Lately, I’ve had a lot of emails from people who have become debilitated by the fear that something paranormal or supernatural is going to happen to them. In some cases they’ve been told by psychics that they are cursed (lordy), or they’ve actually had an encounter or two with something negative that they can’t explain.

When you go to sleep in a state of fear you are asking to be visited by something negative. It’s like your mind just sends out a beacon of light saying, “I’m over here. Come and get me!” It’s important to change your state before you go to bed so you can feel more empowered and so you can actually be more empowered to handle whatever’s gonna getcha!

Following are some ways to raise your vibration during the day and evening so you don’t attract something negative when you go to sleep:

Humor: Spend as much time laughing as you can. Go to a comedy club, watch a funny movie or tv show, hang out with humorous people, read some jokes before you go to sleep.

Gratitude: Spend each night before you go to bed thinking of what you are grateful for and in what ways you feel blessed. This raises your vibration very high.

Compassion: Help someone less fortunate than you or someone that just needs help with something in their life. Offer to lend a hand to a friend.

Love: Express love and allow yourself to receive love. If you’re not in a relationship think about getting an animal companion, or just express love to your family and friends.

Sing and dance: Even if you do it alone in your living room. Put on some inspirational music and sing and dance. Be free, go wild, get into it. Close the curtains.

Luxury: Do something for yourself that you consider a luxury, and allow yourself to feel feel like you deserve it. No shame or guilt for doing this thing. It could be something like a massage or pedicure, or ice cream sundae, or just sitting on a swing in a park. This helps you strengthen your third chakra (your power chakra), and makes you less of a target.

Joy: What makes you feel joyous? Do something totally fun either during the day or before you go to sleep, like working on a hobby or chatting with a friend.

Water: Water is really good for removing negative energy. Take a warm/hot bath, or take a shower before bed.

Also, you should try to stay away from people who are in a low vibrational state like guilt, shame, depression, anger, or fear. Their energy can rub off on you.

Before you go to sleep ask the angels to keep watch over you. Feel their love and light around you. If you find yourself in any sort of trouble you can call on the angels for help. If that doesn’t work, tell the demon one of the jokes from your joke book.

Question: The other night I had a really vivid dream about my deceased grandfather. He told me all kinds of interesting things and it felt so real. Was it really his spirit talking to me or just a dream? How can I tell the difference?

Answer: It is possible for deceased loved ones to visit us in our dreams. It’s actually an ideal place for them to make contact. For one, you are in a relaxed state so it’s easier for them to get your attention. For another, you are disconnected from the physical and more connected to your subconscious and/or superconscious if you are a lucid dreamer. And lastly, dreams are sort of the mid-ground between here and there so it’s like meeting in the middle. But just because it’s possible doesn’t mean it happens often. So how can you tell when a dream is more than a dream?

My grandfather was a very quiet man in life. He was very serene, calm, and peaceful. After he died I had more communication with him than I ever did while he was alive. He is the one that came to me in a dream to tell me I was going to have a miscarriage. After that incident came true, I noticed he started coming around more. It was strange really because he is the last person I would have suspected of having after-life communication with. But there he is, always first in line to come speak to me. God bless him.

Spirit communication feels very different than a dream. Usually with spirit communication the deceased person will simply speak with you, whether they are sitting on your bed or standing in front of it, or calling on a phone. Their message is short, clipped and to the point. There is often a feeling of a cold wind around them, and the dream will probably have a crisp and clear feel to it. You will easily remember the entire experience, unlike in a dream where details are hazy. When you wake up it will feel like you simply opened your eyes, you won’t feel groggy and sleepy, in fact you could feel very energized. There are usually no other dream characters, just you and the dearly departed. You could have a long conversation with them or just pick up a snatch of warning.

When you have just a regular dream about a deceased person that is not spirit communication. For example: “The other night I dreamed that my grandfather and I were playing basketball and I was having a hard time getting the ball into the basket. Then all these people were cheering for me and I felt better and did a slam dunk.” Not a spirit communication. In this case the grandfather, though deceased in real life, is just a dream character, a subconscious symbol.

When you wake from an experience with a deceased loved one you will probably be thinking to yourself, “Wow, that felt so real. I really felt like my mother was right here with me.” You will be filled with a sense of peace and love, or possibly anxiety if they offered you a warning. They don’t usually come just to chew the fat, it’s not easy reaching someone in a dream.

Most often their messages are of the reassuring variety. “I’m okay, I’m safe, I made it. Don’t grieve for me. I love you, send love to your father…” and the like. Sometimes shortly after death they will come to members of the family to give them important information like the location of their will if no one can find it.

Is there a way to call a spirit to come to you in a dream? Yes! Right before you go to sleep, focus your thoughts on the deceased loved one you’d like to reach. Ask him or her to come to you in your dream. It helps if you are someone who easily remembers their dreams, otherwise it’s like going through quicksand or thick mud to reach you. You may want to clear your chakras a little before you go to sleep, sort of like cleaning the antenna. Ask your angels to help the chosen spirit come to you. Open the way for that spirit to find you. It may take several attempts. There’s also the chance the spirit will never come, not because they don’t want to but because they cannot make the journey or they simply don’t know how. That’s why asking the angels to help guide them to you is important.

Your dearly departed loved ones could be just a dream away.

A few years ago before I was a practicing psychic, but still having psychic experiences, I had an interesting dream that I knew was different. In the dream, I was hovering on the ceiling of a room like I might be during an astral experience. Below me I saw a young couple asleep in their bed. Their clock read just after midnight. I felt intuitively like I was just there to watch so I didn’t try to interact with the dream at all.

In short order, the woman woke up with a pained look on her face (there was enough light for me to see pretty well but none of their lights were on). I saw almost immediately that she was very pregnant. I watched as for the next two hours or so as she went to her bathroom and then went padding around the room, periodically rubbing her stomach and stopping to breathe. She sat in her rocking chair and tried not to vocalize her discomfort. To me, she was obviously in labor. But she didn’t wake her husband.

Finally around 2am, her labor seemed to pick up and she was having trouble dealing with the pain of her contractions. She woke her husband who was very excited and asked if they should go to the hospital. She responded that she wasn’t sure if it was too early and didn’t want to be sent home. Her husband left the bedroom and came back with her mother and father who were apparently staying with her in anticipation of their grandchild being born. Much discussion ensued but the girl was adamant about not wanting to go to the hospital prematurely. They turned on the lights and tried to make her as comfortable as possible.

Around 5:30am her water broke, and she was in a lot of pain and ready to go to the hospital. While they were running around getting dressed and packed and ready, she collapsed onto the floor and proclaimed the baby was coming! The family panicked. She said there was no time, she could feel the baby’s head emerging. Her mother put towels under her body, her husband supported her from behind, and it looked like her father ran off to call 911. But in the span of just a few minutes, her baby was born, shocking her mother and husband. Her mother scooped the baby up and wrapped it in a towel. Her father came back in, phone in hand, and said the paramedics were on the way.

But there was a problem. Not with the baby, who seemed fine, but with the girl. She began bleeding out. Husband and parents were panicking as they did not know how to stop the bleeding. I watched as her life ebbed from her, and even as the paramedics arrived about 15 minutes after the baby was born, I felt intuitively, though I did not witness it, that she was not going to make it.

I woke up, totally upset for what I had witnessed. The dream seemed to take place in real time as far as I could tell. I felt like I had spent 6 hours with this family, and I had no idea why I had that dream. But I knew it wasn’t a subconscious message that needed interpretation. I knew I had witnessed something I was supposed to see.

I shook off the effects of the dream and went on about my day. I found myself shopping at Costco later in the day. As I got into line I looked up and saw the girl from my dream. She was working the cash register in my line. It didn’t just look like her, it was her. I’d spent 6 hours with her in my dream and I would have recognized her anywhere. Except, she was not pregnant; in fact, she was very skinny.

So I didn’t know what to say or do. But I heard a voice in my head say, “Tell her! You must warn her!” I said back to the voice, “Are you crazy? She’s going to think I’m a nut job. She’s not even pregnant. There must be some mistake.”

“No mistake, Erin. You’re not wrong. Tell her!” the voice replied.

Remember that at this time I was just a web developer with a vegan magazine. I couldn’t even think what I was going to say to her, but the voice in my head was commanding. And I knew I would regret it if I didn’t say anything to her and something happened. I also knew I would always wonder what became of her and if my dream was a premonition of some kind.

With at least 3 people behind me in line, I got to the checkout and exchanged pleasantries with the girl, whose nametag said, “Maryann.” The voice was back, “Tell her now, Erin. Don’t be afraid. Do it!”

So I took a deep breath and said as quietly as I could. “I know this is going to sound a little crazy, but are you pregnant by any chance?”

She almost dropped my lettuce. She looked at me like she’d just seen a ghost. The person bagging my groceries also heard what I asked and the look on her face was a mixture of shock, wonder, and clearly she thought I was being rude to ask a total stranger if she was pregnant, especially since one look at her would suggest otherwise.

But Maryann’s hand came to her mouth, shaking, and she said, “How could you possibly know that? I haven’t even told my husband yet!” Her compatriot putting my groceries away said, “Is that true? Are you pregnant?”

Maryann said in a nervous voice, “Yes! I mean, I just found out a couple of days ago. How did you know?”

Now I wasn’t sure what to say and how much detail I should go into. I said, “Well, I’m a little psychic and it was just a feeling and for some reason I felt I had to share.”

Maryann started crying a little and said, “We’ve been trying for 3 years to get pregnant. I had just about given up hope. But I told my husband 2 weeks ago to start getting the nursery ready because I just knew I was going to be pregnant soon. I can’t believe you knew.”

The woman behind me in line leaned in and said, “That’s amazing that you knew that. She doesn’t look pregnant at all.”

My inner voice wasn’t satisfied though. She said, “Warn her. You’ve got to warn her about what’s going to happen.” I tensed up. I couldn’t tell this excited woman that she was going to die in childbirth. My guide said, “Just warn her, you don’t have to tell her the outcome. Give her a warning.”

So I said, “Listen, I need to tell you something. When you’re 9 months pregnant you’re going to wake up in the middle of the night and wonder if you’re in labor. At the first sign of contractions I want you to go to the hospital. Wake your husband, it’s okay. You want to err on the side of caution. You don’t want to accidentally have a homebirth do you?” (Big believer in homebirths here, but in this case, nuh uh!).

She said, “Oh. Okay. I will. I promise.”

The woman behind me in line said, “That’s amazing. You know something don’t you?”

I replied, “Let’s just say she wants to get to the hospital at the first sign of labor and everything will be just fine.”

Maryann thanked me and finished up with my order. As I was leaving I heard Maryann and her friend, the bagger, discussing her pregnancy with excitement. I heard her say, “I can’t wait to tell my husband and I can’t wait to tell him what that lady said.”

Did I do the right thing? I was back at Costco 5 months later and I saw Maryann from afar. She was definitely looking pregnant now. I didn’t go up to her or say anything though.

A couple of years later I wondered how things went with Maryann. I scanned for her everytime I went to Costco, but I didn’t see her. Finally, I did! She was back to her skinny self. Steve urged me to go up to her and find out how things went, but I wasn’t in her line and simply wasn’t brave enough to butt into line and start asking how her labor went. It was enough for me to see that she was okay.

Mission accomplished.
