Ask Erin: Are ghosts dangerous?

Question: Can contacts with ghosts be dangerous, or are they only frightening but otherwise mostly harmless? How can one protect oneself against such dangers, if any? - Patrick
Answer: I wasn’t sure if I wanted to answer this question or not because I didn’t want to scare anyone. But the honest answer is that you can be physically harmed by contact with spirits, entities, ghosts, and other things that go bump in the night. You can protect yourself from a lot of it, but if a low-energy, negative spirit or entity really wanted to do you in, you would have little chance of successfully defending yourself unless you were trained.
The good news is that you are very unlikely to ever encounter an entity this evil so you probably don’t have to worry about it.
The key is how you vibrate and what you are drawing to you. If you lower your vibrational energy to the point where it is coinciding on the same plane as the evil entity, they will have access to you just as sure as if they were standing next to you. Keeping your energy high prevents them from being able to affect you.
How do you do that?Â
If you are experimenting with psychic abilities and trying to reach the other side, you must not fear. As Paul Atreides said in Dune: “Fear is the mind killer. I must not fear.” And it’s true.
When I was 15 and just learning how to astral project I was attracting all manner of negative beings to bedside. Only by calling upon my spirit guides and the Light of Christ to help me was I able to avoid permanent harm. I had one friend who was able to explain to me how damaging it can be to go astral while you’re afraid.  I told him about the “ooky spookies” that were hounding me when I went astral and he told me that the next time I saw one to just turn my back on it. I thought he was crazy.  How could I fight something I couldn’t see?Â
The next time I went astral, as my spirit merged with the astral plane, I saw a huge skeleton coalesce in my desk chair. It turned towards me and stood up. There were colored lights swirling inside his bones, but his eye sockets were gleaming an evil red. He began coming towards me and I knew if he touched me I would die (silver cord severed - game over). I remembered what my friend told me and with every ounce of will I could muster, I turned my back on the skeleton. The strength of will that that required moved me into a higher energy state. The entire room brightened. I moved out of phase with that entity and it was simply gone. I breathed an astral sigh of relief and went flying about the night with a confidence that stayed with me long after that experience. It was that experience that taught me the importance of keeping my vibrational energy as high as possible.
When your dead relative is standing at the foot of your bed, don’t worry. No harm will come to you. When you actually go traveling about on other planes, you do need to be careful. You’re on their turf, so to speak, and they know the rules there better than you do.
Generally speaking, if you are in your own body, on our prime material plane, you have little to fear (unless you’ve got a poltergeist throwing chairs at you…). If you decide to delve deeper into the unknown, be sure you go into it with a nice little prayer and the phone number of the nearest spirit guide.
Always remember that you come from a place of love and joy. Lower energy beings are attracted to your light and they pretty much want to suck you dry. Don’t let them. If you don’t know what you’re doing, be really careful. But don’t be afraid to experiment a little; just make sure your energy is good, high, and loving. Saying a little prayer before doing something on the astral realm is a really good idea. Mine goes like this (feel free to adapt it as necessary):
“I am surrounded by the white light of Jesus Christ. In His light I am protected and safe from harm.” As I say this I imagine myself surrounded by a strong and powerful white light full of high energy and love. I also say it three times. It allows it to sink in, and it’s like sending a carbon copy to all the entities out there who might be listening and waiting for their chance to jump me.
Be careful out there and obey the rules of the road. The life you save could be your own.

Why is it that you call on the “Light of Christ”? I thought you werent of any religious affiliation, or is there any “power” that using his name carries? Could you of just said surrounded in the light of Joe Smith, imagining a shining being called Joe, or is there a significance in using the light of an actual high-energy being like Jesus Christ?

Timothy, that’s a great question! I think I’ll answer it in a separate blog entry since others may want to know why I do that. Stay tuned.

I have read that there are 3 types of “spirits” that most of us (that are not especially gifted in the paranormal) may encounter
1) ghosts - spiritual imprints that cannot see us and cannot be coaxed to leave
2) “emotions” - anyone in that space will feel the same emotion - sadness, joy, etc - depends on the spirit
3) poltergeists that move things and make noise to get attention - these can be persuaded to stop
What do you think?

Carrie: That sounds a little too simple and limited to me. There is a lot more than that, though those are valid experiences too.

For as long as I can remember, When I walk into a room or past a doorway I sometimes see a white line along the edge of a doorway or along side of a chair. Could this be a spirit or do you think it’s some kind of an optical illusion ?

Tammy: It’s probably not a spirit. It’s probably a perception issue.

[…] So my thinking stood until recently. Then, as I began reading more about ceremonial magic, I was struck by the prevalence of protective charms, rituals, and so forth. Clearly, there are a lot of people in the magical community who believe in evil spirits. Then I stumbled on erinpavlina.com. Erin Pavlina is an up-and-coming medium who is also a great blogger. On her site, you can read all about her experiences with vindictive ghosts and skeletons with glowing eyes. It is hard not to believe her first-hand accounts. Luckily, she knows several techniques to protect herself, so she doesn’t have much trouble with them. But she warns anyone wishing to follow in her footsteps that the path she followed was a wild and woolly one. I also read somewhere that the only reason that evil spirits don’t go around possessing people all over the world is that most people believe so strongly that evil spirits don’t exist, and that their bodies are inviolable, that the spirits can’t get in. Effectively, the disbelief itself is a powerful protective spell. I began to wonder if evil spirits might exist after all. I wasn’t prepared to go out looking for them, but I needed more data. […]

[…] I think I may have written a blog entry on if ghosts or negative energy can hurt you. Let me find the link: Erin Pavlina - Spiritual Wisdom for Conscious People » Blog Archive » Ask Erin: Are ghosts dangerous? Keep telling them to go away until you don’t feel afraid anymore. One thing that will raise your vibration pretty quickly is humor. Watch something funny before going to bed. Gratitude works too. Call someone on the phone and tell them you love them. Nothing is as magical a "shield" as love. __________________ Erin Pavlina Psychic Medium, Author, Speaker, Blogger, Wife to Steve Pavlina "Erin’s reading was unbelievably insightful.
